This is maybe a combo of astro and terrestrial photogrpahy. The other night while working late at home, I stepped outside to take a breath and, as always, take a glance at the night sky. It was in between our West Coast seemingly endless train of storms, and the first high clouds were just marching in off the Pacific providing a thin viel over the full moon. The halo around the moon I thought was quite striking, so I ran and grabbed my DSLR - same one I bought in 2010, and with which I started my astrophotography journey. I took a few different exposures - some to catch the halo and coloring at the edge of that halo, and a few to capture the visibile features on the moon. In the end, I blended two exposures - the first at 1/6" , 85mm (F.5,6) to capture the halo, and 1/2000 at the same focal length, both at ISO200 with a stock lens. The halo exposure was histogram stretched in the same way we do with deep space objects, and a few other post processing techniques common to astrophotography. I was quite surprised at the interesting colors - expecting rainbow, but getting a host of blues, greens and oranges. I'm glad I took that 15 minute detour from a night's work.
